Jordin Tootoo - Induction Video
Jordin Tootoo changed what generations of young Inuit athletes believed was possible.

Raised in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Jordin grew up with a passion for hockey and a determination to pursue the game at its highest level. His journey took him from the rinks of the North to major junior hockey and ultimately to the National Hockey League, where he made history as the first Inuk player to play in the NHL.

Selected by the Nashville Predators in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Jordin made his NHL debut in 2003. Over a career spanning more than a decade, he played for the Nashville Predators, Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils, and Chicago Blackhawks, earning respect for his determination, physical style of play, energy, and willingness to compete every time he stepped onto the ice.

But Jordin's impact reaches far beyond professional hockey.

His accomplishments opened doors, challenged perceptions, and demonstrated that where an athlete comes from does not have to determine how far they can go.

Throughout his career and in the years since, Jordin has remained connected to the North and has used his experiences to encourage and inspire others. He has spoken openly about perseverance, overcoming adversity, mental wellness, and the importance of asking for help. Through his advocacy and community work, he has become an important voice for youth and communities across Nunavut.

His legacy is measured not only by the games he played or the history he made, but by the generations who followed him believing that they, too, could dream bigger.

Jordin will forever hold a special place in Nunavut's sporting history. He was a trailblazer who carried his family, his community, Inuit, and Nunavut with pride onto the national and international stage.

For breaking barriers as the first Inuk to play in the National Hockey League, for inspiring generations of Northern athletes, and for his continued leadership, advocacy, and commitment to Inuit youth and communities, we proudly induct Jordin Tootoo into the Nunavut Sport and Recreation Hall of Fame.

His journey began in the North, but the path he created continues for generations
